Network Broadband Service Provider, Swift Networks has announced the launch of a free WiFi package for users in Lagos.
The service, named Red Cheetah, will give users a daily data limit of one gigabyte on the Red Cheetah app- which can be downloaded on app stores.
However, users will be required to view ads from sponsors and partners who make the service free.
According to Swift, it hopes to have 10,000 hotspots in Lagos and so far, it has achieved 500 which includes 250 BRT buses.
It also revealed that the service is already available in locations such as MMA-2, Hard Rock Café, Shiro restaurant, Festival Mall, some Tastee Fired Chicken and Bukka Hut outlets, over 200 BRT Buses, Smart Cabs, Eko Hospital, VGC Club.
However, businesses who would like to be a part of the service will pay a one-time fee of N30,000
In the past data users in Nigeria have lamented the inadequate services and high tariffs of prevalent WiFi data providers in the country.
The government’s target of 30% broadband penetration by the end of 2018 is seen by many as unachievable considering the pace and some obvious constraints on the part of broadband providers.
According to a World Bank report finding that a that a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration yields an additional 1.38 percent increase in GDP growth for low to middle-income in the country.
Swift Networks Limited is a facilities-based telecommunications services provider. The company was founded in 2002 when it bided and obtained a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) License from Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to provide multi-service broadband connectivity services to businesses and residential subscribers.
It recently attracted foreign direct investment from The International Finance Corporation (IFC), European Investment Bank and Commonwealth Development Corporation under the Capital Alliance Private Equity II fund scheme managed by Capital Alliance Nigeria.
