In contemporary society where entertainers are known for their roles on and off the screen, few fans rarely take out time to know the educational background of some of these stars. In Nollywood for instance, it is no news that most Nollywood stars are graduates with university degrees yet, there are few who studied course unrelated to their acting careers and some went as far as obtaining two or more degrees.
This collection could be a mentoring piece for undergraduates who’s got one of them as their role model. Here are some of Nollywood celebrities and what they studied in school.
Anayo Modestus Onyekwere:
Popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, the veteran actor is an alumnus of University of Lagos where he bagged a degree in philosophy. He made his first appearance in “Living in bondage”. Recently, he also obtained a degree in law from the University of Abuja in 2018. Rumour has it that this is his fifth degree.
Wife of the veteran actor, Olu Jacobs, she bears the stage name ‘Joke Silver’ which doesn’t go down with some Nollywood fans. the world class actress is an graduate of English from the University of Lagos.
Richard Mofe Damijo
Veteran Nollywood actor popularly referred to as RMD studied Theatre arts at the University of Benin. He started his acting career and starred in several movies after which he went back to study law in the University of Lagos in 1997. His mother’s wish had always been for him to become a lawyer.
Ini Edo as she is known has a diploma in Theatre Arts from the University of Uyo before proceeding for a Bachelors Degree in English from the University of Calabar. In 2014, Ini Edo took to her instagram profile to the effect that she received a scholarship to study la at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). What remains of the degree is yet to be ascertained.
Currently a House of Assembly member at the Lagos State House of Assembly, veteran actor, Desmond Elliot is a major in Economics from the University of Lagos.
James Ikechuhwu Esomuagha
He took the stage name ‘Jim Iyke’ and was once known as Nollywood’s finest. Jim Iyke has a diploma in banking and finance from the University of Jos, Plateau State and a B.Sc in Philosophy from the same university.
Akindele Olufunke Ayotunde
Veteran Nollywood actress Funke Akindele studied mass communication at Moshood Abiola polytechnic in Ogun state, however it was a diploma course after which she went for law in the University of Lagos. She graduated from law but was unable to go to to law school because she had gone into acting and she had always wanted to be an actress.
Veteran actress Kate Henshaw studied medical microbiology at the University of Calabar. Contrary to popular opinion, she ventured into acting in Nollywood and has been outstanding in her roles.
This Nollywood Diva is a diploma and Bachelors degree holder in Human Kinetics and Health Education both of which she got from the prestigious University of Lagos. She also bags a degree in Film Making from the New York Film Academy, Los Angeles, Carlifornia.
Son of the famous legal luminary and Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana, it is no surprise that Falz the Bahd Guy (as he is popularly called) has a degree in law from the University of Reading, United Kingdom, after which he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School where he was called to bar in 2012. He made a life-changing decision to join the entertainment industry and indeed Nollywood where he starred in movies like ‘10 Days in Sun City’ and is famous for his role as Segun in the soap opera ’Jenifa’s Diary’.
