Career with purpose

A Career is one’s calling in life. But its quite an irony that majority of people don’t take up calling as a career.

If one thing applies to every human, its a career.

Everyone has a career. But some of us have perceived it to be for a certain set of people. I once did.

The word “Career” can be thought of as “carrier” and in medical terms, a “carrier” refers to someone who carries a symptomless infection.

We were all born as “Carriers”, carrying a “function.” That function is your calling. (No pun intended programmers.)

Our school system has made most people to choose the wrong careers, with few people choosing the right ones. However, there’s more to it than choosing.

Contrary to what is, school is meant to help one discover his function/career in the most formal and so-called 6-3-3-4 way.

Education can be seen as a 2-process stage

1. Learning something about everything.

2. Everything about something. (Higher institution)

No. 2 is crucial, and one’s career is meant to start before and not after learning everything about something because by then, chances of having a wholesome career is slim.

In addition to that, life is the best teacher.

Stage 2 education occurs typically in a higher institution eg: A university 🎓.

In the university you’re taught everything first before experiencing your field in real life. But in life, you experience first before learning your lessons.

Many successful people were taught by life

Case study 1: Musicians

career guide, education

You will agree with me that most successful musicians did not study music in school prior to starting their career. They discovered it as a calling, went into it and learn along the way.

Case study 2 : Successful Business Men

career guide, education

Majority of them neither went to business school nor had an MBA prior to starting up their businesses. In Nigeria, most successful business men started small and were taught lessons by experience and life. (some failed many times). The others did apprenticeship.

Another reason why life is the best lecturer.

Case study 3 is people who started their careers while in school.

Some of them had to stop school because why?

They realized that life is a better teacher.

The Science is this;

When we learn, we are making associations/linkages/new connections in our head

The human brain is filled with a billion linkages. Some are optimum linkages, some are useless linkages.

In school you learn and cram and write exams.. You’re making useless linkages. Except for the little ones you practiced in school.. Which are still half as useless. This is because you don’t have a work you are doing, to associate what you’re learning with.

In life’s own way of teaching, you start off serving/working as a rookie in your field, gaining experience little by little. Every lesson you learnt along they way links to your experience, making it an OPTIMAL linkage.

Who says no knowledge is a waste?

Science says the brain personally strengthens linkages it feels you need and slowly do away with linkages it feels you no longer need. That’s why over time, you tend to forget things you no longer recall and things you don’t encounter or associate with another thing.

_____

In conclusion, when you find your calling, don’t put it after school. Start sight away, let school follow suit. The best time to discover your talent is after secondary school, you’ve got to make that a priority before proceeding to a higher institution.

For instance, if after secondary school, you became interested in designing buildings, don’t just go and study architecture and come out. Become an apprentice for an architect while you study.

If you love ICT, you may want to start up your career playing with some programming language and carrying it along in studies.

This helps you achieve a stronger career.
